As of 2023, the number of total districts in Haryana is 22. Haryana is a northern state in India that shares borders with Rajasthan to the south and west and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the north. Haryana was constituted as an independent state on 1 November 1966 with seven districts. Over the years, many new districts were added to the state.

How Many Districts in Haryana

There are a total of 22 districts in Haryana. Initially, there were only 7 districts in the state of Haryana. However, over the years, the government of Haryana introduced many more districts. The latest of all the Haryana districts is Charkhi Dadri, which was formed in 2016.

The people responsible for managing the different administrative concerns for the state of Haryana include

  • Deputy Commissioner or District Magistrate (DM) looks after the law and order situation in all the Haryana districts.
  • A Superintendent of Police, along with Haryana police officials is responsible for assisting the DM and following orders.
  • The development of the subdivisions of each district of Haryana is looked after by an elected head of development departments.
  • Deputy Conservator of Forests is responsible for managing wildlife and environmental concerns in the districts.

History of Districts of Haryana

The history of Haryana districts can be traced back to 1 November 1966 when the state of Haryana was established. This move was made after the partition of then-East Punjab. Initially, the districts of Haryana included Jind, Rohtak, Hisar, Gurgaon, Ambala, Karnal and Mahendragarh.

In addition to the seven districts, 15 more districts were added to the state of Haryana. The newest addition to the Haryana districts list is Charkhi Dadri, which was carved out of the Bhiwani district in 2016.
