The Cabinet Committee on Security is a committee of the Union Cabinet of India, consisting of senior ministers of India, who look after the country's defence and security concerns. It is headed by the Prime Minister of India and has three other members: Defence Minister, Home Minister and External Affairs Minister. Other members may be included as and when needed.

The Cabinet Committee on Security reviews all issues related to defence, foreign affairs and external security, internal security and intelligence matters, nuclear issues and space policy.

The Prime Minister chairs the committee. The four-member committee will deal with internal and external security, defence, foreign affairs, space and disarmament and is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Role of the Cabinet Committee on Security

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is a committee of the Union Council of Ministers, the apex decision-making body of the Government of India. It is a mighty committee and deals with India's internal and external security. The Prime Minister heads it, and it has the Home Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister and External Affairs Minister as members. The National Security Advisor (NSA) acts as secretary-level coordinator in matters within its purview.

The cabinet secretariat maintains a record of all Cabinet Committees on Security proceedings.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs deals with political matters while this committee deals with security matters. It is responsible for deciding on defence and security matters. Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru formed the committee in 1947 to assess the political, economic and military situation in India's border areas.

The CCS currently consists of the Prime Minister as chairperson, the Home Minister and Minister of Defence as members and the Finance Minister as ex officio member.

Significance of Cabinet Committee on Security

In addition to its role in dealing with matters requiring immediate action, the CCS also prepares a memorandum for Cabinet meetings on any essential or urgent issue. In addition to this, it also takes up matters that are required to be dealt with by the cabinet but not included in its programme. It could even examine such proposals that may be referred to by any minister or any other cabinet committee.

The CCS approves all significant defence acquisitions, nuclear matters and national security policy. The committee also monitors internal security issues. The committee also takes essential decisions on security-related issues such as inducting new assets into military services or procuring police and other internal security organisations and approving national security policy.
