MoHUA and UNDP sign MoU for strengthening Waste Management Sector under SBM-U 2.0

Why in News

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India to strengthen the waste management sector in India under the Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0).

Key Points

  • The MoU will be operational for a period of five years (2021-26).
  • Through this MoU, UNDP India will also be facilitating the setting up of 75 Smart Swachhata Kendras across the country, working with local partners and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
  • The collaboration between MoHUA and UNDP India is another step towards realizing the vision of ‘Clean Air, Clean Water, Clean Land’ in urban India through a circular economy approach based on the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) principle.
  • With concerted focus on source segregation and scientific processing of municipal solid waste, the waste processing capacity in India has gone up by nearly 4 times, from 18% in 2014, to 70% on date.

About Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0):

  • It envisions to make all cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ensure grey and black water management in all cities other than those covered under AMRUT, make all urban local bodies as ODF+ and those with a population of less than 1 lakh as ODF++, thereby achieving the vision of safe sanitation in urban areas.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched SBM-U 2.0 on October 01, 2021.

Ministry of Culture implements Scheme of Financial Assistance for the Development of Buddhist/Tibetan Culture and Art under “Kala Sanskriti Vikas Yojna”

Why in News

  • Recently, the Ministry of Culture implemented a Scheme of Financial Assistance for the Development of Buddhist/Tibetan Culture and Art under “Kala Sanskriti Vikas Yojna (KSVY)”.

Key Points

  • Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to the voluntary Buddhist and Tibetan Organizations including Monasteries engaged in the propagation and scientific development of Buddhist/ Tibetan Culture and tradition, located in any part of the country. 
  • The quantum of funding is Rs.30.00 lakhs per year for an organization.  
  • The Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) on the scheme is empowered to recommend the amount beyond the maximum limit but not exceeding Rs.1.00 crore from this scheme. 

Kala Sanskriti Vikas Yojna (KSVY):

  • It is an umbrella scheme under the Ministry of Culture for the promotion of art and culture in the country. It is a central sector scheme.

BEE announces 31st National Energy Conservation Awards and 1st National Energy Efficiency Innovations Awards

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the guidance of Ministry of Power, recognizes and encourages endeavors of industrial units, institutions and establishments in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA)on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, celebrated on 14th December every year. 
  • This year,a new award - National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards (NEEIA) is also institutionalized.

Key Points

  • This year, the NECA and NEEIA awards are being organized as part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
  • The National Energy Conservation Awards are given to the energy-intensive units of various sectors of the Indian economy for their exceptional achievements in reducing the specific energy consumption.

India successfully test-fires air version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

  • India successfully test-fired the air version of the BrahMossupersonic cruise missile from the supersonic fighter aircraft Sukhoi 30 MK-I from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.

Key Points

  • In this copy book flight, the missile launched from the aircraft followed the pre-planned trajectory meeting all mission objectives.
  • BrahMos is a Joint Venture between India (DRDO) and Russia (NPOM) for the development, production and marketing of the supersonic cruise missile.
  • BrahMos is the potent offensive missile weapon system already inducted into the Armed Forces.

Note: Earlier, Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) was successfully flight tested by Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.

“President’s Standard” presented to 22nd Missile Vessels Squadron of the Indian Navy

  • President Ramnath Kovind presented the ‘President’s Standard’ to the 22ndMissile Vessels Squadron of the Indian Navy at a ceremonial event in Mumbai.  

Key Points

  • The President’s Standard is the highest honour bestowed by the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces to a military unit in recognition of the service rendered to the nation.

About 22nd Missile Vessels Squadron:

  • The 22nd Missile Vessel Squadron was formally established at Mumbai in October 1991 with ten Veer Class and three Prabal Class missile boats.

Government expands SCALE committee, appoints 3 new members

  • The Central government has expanded the SCALE committee (Steering Committee for Advancing Local Value-Add and Exports) by adding three new members, hailing from diverse industry backgrounds.
  • The new appointees are Panasonic India Chairman and CEO Manish Sharma, Toyota Kirloskar Vice-Chairman Vikram S Kirloskar, and Asian Paints co-promoter and Chairman Addverb Technologies Jalaj Dani.

Key Points

  • Currently, the 14-member SCALE committee is headed by former Mahindra CEO Pawan Goenka.
  • It has representation from industry bodies such as FICCI, CII, ASSOCHAM and officials from commerce and other ministries.
  • The SCALE Committee, formed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has been working closely with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the guidance of the ministry.
  • The SCALE committee has given impetus to the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which is enabling the environment for domestic manufacturing capability in the country.

Padma Shri awardee Nanda Prusty passes away

  • Padma Shri awardee and teacher from Odisha, Nanda Prusty passed away at 104.
  • Nanda Prusty, popularly known as 'Nanda Master', was honoured with the Padma Shri on November 9, 2021 for his long contribution in the field of education and social service.
  • Prusty, who had to discontinue his studies after Class 7 owing to his family's financial condition, had been teaching children free of cost since Independence with the goal of eradicating illiteracy in his village.

Former MLA Urimajalu K. Rama Bhat passes away
