Data on job loss during the 2020 lockdown for COVID pandemic

Why in News

  • Recently, the Ministry of Labour and Employment presented the data on job loss during the 2020 lockdown for the COVID pandemic.
  • The data is based on the All India Quarterly Establishment based Employment Survey (AQEES).

Key Points

  • About 7.5 per cent job losses were seen during the lockdown for the COVID pandemic last year, with the manufacturing, construction, education and trade sectors bearing the brunt more than white-collared employment in IT/BPOs, financial services and health sectors.
  • Among the nine key sectors covered for the AQEES, the manufacturing sector recorded job losses of 14.2 lakh between the pre-lockdown (March 25, 2020) and post-lockdown (July 1, 2020) period.
  • The construction sector recorded a loss of 1 lakh, while the trade and education sectors registered job losses of 1.8 lakh and 2.8 lakh, respectively.
  • Job losses in the financial services sector, on the other hand, were recorded at 0.4 lakh and at 1 lakh for the IT/BPOs sector during the same period.
  • Female workers registered a job loss of 7.44 per cent among the nine key sectors, while the job loss figure for male workers between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown period stood at 7.48 percent, data showed.

About All-India Quarterly Establishment-based Employment Survey (AQEES):

  • The AQEES has been taken up by the Labour Bureau to provide frequent (quarterly) updates about the employment and related variables of establishments, in both organised and unorganised segments of nine selected sectors.
  • The 9 sectors are Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transport, Education, Health, Accommodation and Restaurants, IT/BPO, Financial Service Activities.

Delhi’s Nizamuddin Basti conservation project wins 2 UNESCO Awards 2021

  • Delhi’s Nizamuddin Basti conservation project won 2 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021.
  • The project has won the prestigious Award of Excellence and another award in the Special Recognition for Sustainable Development
  • 9 projects from 6 countries — Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand — have been honoured by a jury of heritage experts.

Key Points

  • The Nizamuddin Area comprises the World Heritage Site of Humayun’s Tomb, Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and Sunder Nursery, Batashewala Tomb-Garden Complex, tomb of courtier poet Khan I Khanan ‘Rahim’ and the Mughal-period caravanserai of Azimganj Serai.
  • The Urban Renewal project, which started in 2007, has successfully unified these segregated zones of the conservation area into an urban historic district of considerable cultural significance.
  • The conservation is being undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in partnership with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, Archaeological Survey of India, Delhi Urban Heritage Foundation, and the Dargah Committee/resident community groups of Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

‘Sandhayak’, first of the four Survey Vessels (Large) project for Indian Navy launched

  • ‘Sandhayak’, the first of the four Survey Vessels (Large) projects being built for the Indian Navy, was launched in

Key Points

  • These survey ships are capable of full scale coastal & deep-water hydrographic survey of Ports & Harbour approaches and determination of navigational channels & routes.
  • These ships are also capable of undertaking surveys of maritime limits and collection of Oceanographic & Geographical data for Defence applications, thus boosting the maritime capabilities of the country.
  • These Vessels have been designed and developed by Defence Public Sector Undertaking, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited, which is among the leading warship building companies in India.
  • It has over 80 percent indigenous content by cost.
  • As per build strategy adopted by GRSE, the first ship is being built at GRSE Ltd and construction of balance three ships is envisaged at M/s L&T Shipbuilding, Kattupalli. 

Note: The ship has taken its name from the first ship of the erstwhile Sandhayak-class survey ships. The erstwhile Sandhayak, incidentally, was also launched in Kolkata 44 years ago, on April 6, 1977.

Skyroot test-fires India's first privately built cryogenic rocket engine ‘Dhawan-1’

  • Skyroot Aerospace, a space technology startup, has test fired India’s first privately developed fully cryogenic rocket engine ‘Dhawan-1’.
  • It will power the upper stages of its upcoming Vikram-2 orbital launch vehicle.

Key Points

  • The rocket engine, named Dhawan-1 in honour of Indian rocket scientist Satish Dhawan, has been developed using 3D printing technology and is fuelled by liquefied natural gas and liquid oxygen—a high-performance, low-cost and clean rocket fuel.
  • This is a completely ‘Made-in-India' cryogenic engine.

  • It is backed by the promoters of renewable energy firm Greenko Group, explosives manufacturer and ISRO supplier Solar Industries and Curefit founder Mukesh Bansal.

Note: In September, 2021, the company became the first space tech firm to formally enter into an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to utilise its facilities and get access to its expertise for testing and qualification of its small satellite launch vehicles.

Paika rebellion to be included as ‘case study’ in history textbook

  • The Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said that the 1817 Paika rebellion of Odisha could not be called the first war of Independence, but considering it as a beginning of a popular uprising against the British.
  • It would be included as a case study in the Class 8 National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) history textbook.

Key Points

  • For the first time in 2017, the Odisha state cabinet had passed a proposal to formally urge the centre to declare the Paika rebellion as the first war of Independence.
  • At present, the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 is called the first war of Independence against British Rule.

Assam to confer state’s top civilian award to Ratan Tata

  • The Assam government will confer the state’s highest civilian awards to industrialist Ratan Tata, Olympian Lovlina Borgohain and an array of personalities from diverse fields.
  • Former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata was named as the recipient of the Assam Baibhav award for his contribution towards cancer care facilities in the state.

Key Points

  • The state government has decided to confer Assam Baibhav, Assam Saurav and Assam Gaurav Awards, 2021 to 19 personalities and the award ceremony will be held on January 24, 2022.
  • The Assam Baibhav award will be worth Rs 5 lakh, the Assam Saurav award will be worth Rs 4 lakh, and the Assam Gaurav award will carry a cash component of Rs 3 lakh.
