Times Higher Education Rankings 2023

  • The Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking 2023 has been released covering 1,799 universities from 104 countries and territories.

key points:

  • Times Higher Education formerly known as Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) is a magazine reporting exclusively on news and issues related to higher education.
  • Oxford University has been ranked first in the Times Higher Education Ranking 2023.
  • India is the sixth most prestigious performing nation in the Times Higher Education Ranking 2023 with 75 universities.
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been ranked top among Indian institutions for its performance score for teaching and research, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in Himachal Pradesh is second and Tamil Nadu's Alagappa University has been ranked third this year.

Global Hunger Index 2022

  • The Global Hunger Index 2022 has been released jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.

key points:

  • India has been ranked 107th out of 121 countries in this year's Global Hunger Index 2022.
  • India's score in the Global Hunger Index 2022 is 29.1, and India has been placed in the 'severe' category this year.
  • Earlier, India was ranked 101st out of 116 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2021.
  • The Global Hunger Index is calculated based on four indicators which include undernutrition, child wasting, child stunting and child mortality.
  • Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, China, and Croatia are the top five countries in the 2022 Global Hunger Index, while Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, the Central African Republic and Yemen are the worst performers in the index.
  • In the Global Hunger Index 2022, Sri Lanka (64), Nepal (81), Bangladesh (84) and Pakistan (99) have been ranked better than India.
  • Afghanistan (109) is the only country in South Asia, which performs worse than India in the index.

Cabinet approved PM-DevINE scheme for development of Northeast states

  • The Prime Minister's Development Initiative PM-DevINE for the Northeastern Region has received approval from the Union Cabinet.

Key Points:

    • With the intention of closing the growth gap in the Northeastern Region, PM-DevINE was introduced in the Union Budget 2022–23. (NER).
    • The PM-DevINE plan receives 100 percent of its support from the government.
    • The PM-DevINE program will spend Rs 6,600 crore over the course of four years, from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026.

 

  • The goal of the PM-DevINE Scheme is to finance infrastructure that includes PM Gati Shakti, support social development initiatives based on requirements identified by the NER, and close the growth gap in a number of different industries.
