Air pollution in rural areas of India

  • To measure air pollution in rural India, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has embarked on a new 2.5 million project to install around 1,400 sensors in rural blocks of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

  • In the year 2019, the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) was launched by the government to reduce particulate matter air pollution by 20-30% by the year 2024.

  • Under NCAP, Rs 375.44 crore was provided to 114 cities from the year 2018-19 to the year 2020-21, and Rs 290 crore was allocated to 82 cities for the financial year 2021-22 and for the new project in the year 2021- An allocation of Rs 700 crore has been made as envisaged for 2021-2026.
