Global Forest Sector Outlook 2050

  • The report titled “Global Forest Area Approach 2050: Estimating Wood Sources for Future Demand and Sustainable Economy” has been released by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the 26th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization Committee on Forestry. 

key points:

  • The Global Forest Sector Outlook 2050 released report forecasts a growing demand for wood products such as large-scale timber and man-made cellulose fibers that are used as alternatives to non-renewable materials.
  • According to the Global Forest Sector Outlook 2050 report, more than 1 million jobs are expected to be created in developing countries by the year 2050.
  • According to the newly published report, the consumption of primary processed wood products will increase to 3.1 billion cubic meters by the year 2050.
  • The report showed that in the year 2050, wood energy consumption will be concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where wood is traditionally used by communities to fuel.
  • Firewood will also be used in modern biomass to generate renewable energy.
  • In the year 2020, the global consumption of fuel wood was 1.9 billion cubic meters, and this figure is expected to increase by 11 to 42 percent, reaching 2.1 to 2.7 billion cubic meters in the year 2050.

56 million Indians may have turned Poor in 2020 due to the pandemic: World Bank

  • According to new World Bank estimates, 56 million Indians will experience extreme poverty in the year 2020 due to the pandemic, making a global total of 71 million poor and making it the worst year in poverty reduction since World War II.

  • The report titled "Poverty and Shared Prosperity" has been released by the World Bank.
  • Economists estimate that between 275 million and 300 million people have experienced extreme poverty as a result of the pandemic.
  • Earlier, the Multidimensional Poverty Index prepared by NITI Aayog also classifies 25% of the population as poor.
  • According to the report released by the World Bank, by the end of this year, 685 million people will be living in extreme poverty.
  • In order to provide food security to the underprivileged in India, a free food grains initiative by the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana has been launched by the government.

Cheetah Introduction Project Monitoring: Centre set up 9-member task force

  • A 9-member task force has been constituted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 7 October 2022 to monitor the cheetahs in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh.

key points:

    • The newly constituted task force will be headed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, Madhya Pradesh, Retd. Alok Kumar.
    • According to the ministry, the task force has been constituted for a period of 2 years and will "review, progress and monitor the health status of the cheetah, maintenance of quarantine and soft release enclosures, security status of the entire area, adherence to defined protocols".

 

  • On 17 September 2022, 8 Namibian wild cheetahs were set up in the Kuno National Park in an ambitious effort to resettle Indian wildlife with cheetahs by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

 

  • Earlier in the year 1952, the cheetah was officially declared extinct in India.

Global Crypto Adoption Index 2022

  • Blockchain analysis platform Chain lysis published its Global Crypto Adoption Index for the year 2022 countries with the highest cryptocurrency adoption rate is ranked fourth with India, down two places from last year.

key points:

  • According to the report, 10 of the top 20 ranked countries are low-middle income countries, which includes Vietnam, Philippines, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Morocco, Nepal, Kenya and Indonesia.
  • According to the report, eight of the top 20 ranked countries are included in the list of upper-middle income countries – Brazil, Thailand, Russia, China, Turkey, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador.
  • This year, India ranks above the US, UK and Russia in the index.
  • This year, the Philippines and Ukraine have ranked second and third respectively in the index, demonstrating a significant priority for crypto adoption in the near future.
  • This year also Vietnam has topped the index.
  • According to the report, a proper regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry is still not put in place by the Indian government, except for the 30% crypto tax which was implemented on 1 July this year.

Ex-CJI K.G. Balakrishnan to head Commission to inquire into demand for SC status to non-Hindu Dalits

  • The three-member commission, headed by former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan, has been appointed by the central government to "new persons historically belonging to the Scheduled Castes" who converted to other religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. 

key points:

  • According to a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the commission will also include retired IAS officer Dr Ravinder Kumar Jain and UGC member Prof (Dr) Sushma Yadav as members.
  • The commission will have to submit its report to the ministry in two years.
  • The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, stipulates that any person professing a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism cannot be considered a member of a Scheduled Caste.
  • The original order under which only Hindus were classified was later modified to include Sikhs and Buddhists.
