Google India launches Street View in 10 cities

  • Google launched Street View, a feature already available in over 100 countries across 10 cities in India, that lets users get a 360-degree view of any iconic destination, restaurant, or street.
  • This service is provided by Google in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Nashik, Vadodara, Ahmednagar, and Amritsar.
  • Google announced plans to capture street-level images in 2011, but it was banned in 2016 by the government citing security issues.
  • As per the new geospatial policy released by the government, geospatial data of a spatial accuracy/value that is below one meter horizontally and three meters vertically can only be collected by entities controlled by Indian citizens.
  • Google currently covers 150,000 km through Street View in India and aims to expand it to 50 cities by the end of the year.
  • Street View will also provide information on road closures and incidents in eight cities including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Gurugram, Bengaluru, and Agra on Google Maps, helping people avoid congested areas. 
  • As a new feature, Google Maps will also display the speed limit information shared by traffic officials starting from Bengaluru and Chandigarh.
