Indore won the Swacch Bharat Award 2022, retaining its position as the Cleanest City in India for the sixth consecutive time. Emphasizing the need to keep our surroundings clean, the Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, or the Clean India Mission, on 2nd October 2014, on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

To spread the message further, and ensure participation from every Indian state and UT, the government launched the Swacch Bharat Awards, also known as the Swacch Survekshan Awards. Each year, the Cleanest City in India gets recognition from the President.

Swacch Bharat Award 2022 - Overview

On 1st October 2022, the Swachh Survekshan 2022 was hosted as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in New Delhi. This campaign is dedicated to cleanliness and each year, the Cleanest City in India gets a Swacch Bharat Award.

This year, Indore won the Swacch Bharat Award 2022 for being the Cleanest City with a population of over 1 lakh people. The Swacch Survekshan Award 2022 for the second and third cleanest cities in India went to Surat and Navi Mumbai, respectively.

About Swacch Survekshan Award

Swacch Bharat Awards are presented annually to the Indian states and union territories that contribute to the Swacch Bharat Mission by making cleanliness a priority. The Swacch Bharat Mission was launched in 2014, and for the last 8 years, India has seen a considerable shift in how people prioritize cleanliness.

This year, the Swacch Survekshan Awards were presented at the Azadi@75 Swachh Survekshan 2022 award ceremony held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu facilitated this ceremony and recognized the work done by the Indian cities, states, and UTs.

2. Voice of the Citizens- Direct engagement and feedback of the citizens are considered for the assessment.
3. Certification Assessment- The progress of cities and states is measured through star rating and certification for garbage-free cities and ODF status.
