It is rightly said that Cleanliness is next to Godliness. The proverb perfectly highlights the importance of keeping oneself and one's surroundings clean and thereby progressing to spiritual growth.

Keeping the importance of cleanliness in mind, the Government of India has established a platform that engages the citizens of India to collaborate and carry out ground activities related to cleaning the surroundings. For a long time, the people of India have been treating public places carelessly and littering everywhere. With the initiation of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, many people in the country participated in keeping their surroundings clean. Our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched the Government of India's Citizen Engagement Platform on 26th July 2014. Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, or the Clean India Mission, was launched on 2nd October 2014 on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards are also awarded to the cleanest states and cities under this program. The Swachh Survekshan uses a design for assessment that is based on three key pillars:

  1. Service Level Progress- The cities and states are evaluated based on segregated waste collection, the practice of sustainable sanitation, and ODF (Open Defecation Free) status. Under this, digital tracking and SafaiMitra Suraksha is introduced for better assessment.
  2. Voice of the Citizens- Direct engagement and feedback of the citizens are considered for the assessment.
  3. Certification Assessment- The progress of cities and states is measured through star rating and certification for garbage-free cities and ODF status.

Swachh Bharat Awards 2020

The Swachh Survekshan 2020 saw a massive leap in citizen participation with 1.77 crore feedbacks.
