The SDG Index 2021 was created in India in collaboration with the United Nations. The NITI Aayog developed its index in 2018 to track the country's progress toward its goals using data-driven analysis and encourage states and union territories to compete in achieving them. The SDG Index India rank is given to different states based on various parameters.

SDG Index India rank - Overview

The sustainable development index 2021 India rank considers several factors before assigning the rank.

  • The NITI Aayog's dual goal is to oversee the country's adoption and monitoring of the SDGs and encourage competitive and cooperative federalism among States and UTs.
  • The index articulates the global dimension of the 2030 Agenda's Global Goals while being sensitive to national priorities.
  • The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015.
  • The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a bold pledge to finish what the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) started and address some of the world's most pressing issues.
  • The SDG India Index 2020 - 21, which has cross-sectoral relevance across policy, civil society, industry, and academia, is also available on an online dashboard.

SDG Index Methodology

  • The SDG India Index 2020 - 21 is more comprehensive than previous editions, with a broader range of targets and indicators more closely aligned with the National Indicator Framework (NIF).
  • The 115 indicators cover 70 SDG targets and include 16 of the 17 SDGs and a qualitative assessment of Goal 17.
  • The index used 62 indicators over 39 targets and 13 Goals in the 2018 - 19 and 2019 - 20 editions, respectively, and 100 indicators across 54 and 16 Goals in the 2019 - 20 editions.

SDG Index National Analysis

  • Overall, the country's SDG scores improved by 6 points, from 60 in 2019 to 66 in 2020 - 21.
  • Currently, no states fall into the aspirant and achiever categories; 15 states/UTs fall into the performer category, and 22 states/UTs fall into the front runner category.
  • In 2020, India made substantial progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) about sustainable energy, urban development, and health. In industry, innovation, infrastructure, respectable job, and economic growth, however, there has been a significant fall.

State Wise Performance SDG Index

  • With a score of 75, Kerala remained at the top of the rankings in the third edition of the index, followed by Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh, both with a score of 72.
  • On the other side, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Assam were the states that performed the worst. However, all states improved from the previous year's results, with Mizoram and Haryana showing the most improvement.

SDG Index Ranking

  • Cities are ranked on a scale of 0-100.
  • A score of 100 indicates that the urban area has met the 2030 targets; a score of 0 indicates that it is the least likely of the selected urban areas to meet the targets.
  • The overall or composite urban area scores are then calculated from the Goal-wise scores to assess the urban area's overall performance.
  • Based on their composite score, urban regions have been categorized as follows:
    • Aspirant: 049
    • Performer: 5064
    • Front-Runner: 6599
    • Achiever: 100

Cities are rapidly becoming growth engines. The SDG Urban index and dashboard will go a long way toward establishing a reliable SDG monitoring system in our cities. It is a significant step forward in our SDG localization efforts.
