Operation Ganga

Why in news

  • Recently, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express has joined ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back Indian nationals who have been able to flee Ukraine.

About Operation Ganga

  • It is the initiative launched by the government of India to bring back Indians stranded in Ukraine.
  • Under this, India has already successfully brought back more than 1,000 of its nationals from the country.
  • It has also set up 24×7 control centres to assist in the evacuation of Indians through the border crossing points with Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Slovak Republic.
  • A Twitter handle, ‘OpGanga Helpline’, has also been dedicated to the mission, where all information regarding the evacuation process and advisories of embassies are shared to keep everyone up-to-date.

Kuwait Airlift 1990

  • In this operation nearly 2 lakh Indians were left stranded in Kuwait soon after one lakh Iraqi soldiers had marched into the country, leaving the general public helpless with no way out.
  • Air India registered itself in the Guinness World Records for executing the largest-ever air evacuation mission

Operation Safe Homecoming 2011

  • The Indian government launched Operation Safe Homecoming to rescue over 15,000 Indian nationals stranded in Libya, which was in the midst of a civil war.
  • The operation was conducted through air and sea, bringing back all the citizens safe.

Operation Raahat 2015

  • Operation Raahat was an operation of the Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and foreign nationals from Yemen during the 2015 military intervention by Saudi Arabia and its allies in that country during the Yemeni Crisis.

Samudra Maitri 2018

  • It was a massive humanitarian operation to provide assistance to earthquake and tsunami victims in Indonesia

  • Setting up the IMPO in India would mean expanding an integrated scientific approach to solve the seasonal variability of monsoons, enhancing the prediction skill of monsoons and cyclones, strengthening monsoon research for better support operations and services.
  • It also helps in promoting knowledge sharing and capacity building in areas of monsoon research crucial for agriculture, water resources and disaster management, hydropower and climate-sensitive socio-economic sectors.
