326 ईसा पूर्व में सिकंदर ने हिन्दुकुश पर्वत को पार करके भारत पर आक्रमण किया। सिकंदर ने सर्वप्रथम निशा व अश्मक राज्य को जीता। सिकंदर खैबर दर्रे से होकर भारत में आया था तथा उसका पहला आक्रमण तक्षशिला के राजा आम्भि के विरुद्ध था। तक्षशिला के शासक आम्भि ने समर्पण कर दिया, अभिसार के शासक ने भी आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया। पुरु का राज्य झेलम और चिनाब नदी के बीच पड़ता था। झेलम नदी के तट पर उसका उसका युद्ध पुरु के साथ हुआ, इसे वितस्ता या हाईडेस्पीज़ या झेलम नदी का युद्ध कहा जाता है। इस युद्ध में पुरु की पराजय हुई। सिकंदर की सहायता करने वाले भारतीय शासक शाशिगुप्त, आम्भि और संजय थे। सिकंदर की सेना ने व्यास नदी से आगे बढ़ने से इनकार कर दिया था। लौटते समय उसने सिबोई, अग्रसेनी, मालव, क्षुद्रक, अम्बष्ठ, कठ और मूसिकनोई राज्य को जीता था। सिकंदर ने भारत से वापस जाते समय अपने भू-भाग को तीन हिस्सों में बाँट दिया और तीन यूनानी गवर्नर के हाथों सौंप दिया। बेबीलोन में सिकंदर की मृत्यु 323 ईसा पूर्व में हुई।
