Question 6

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Arms trade
A) China and India, the world’s two emerging economic powers, are demonstrating a sustained increase in their military expenditure and contribute to the growth in world military spending. In absolute terms, their current spending is only a fraction of that of the USA. Their increases are largely commensurate with their economic growth.
B) Brutal civil wars in Syria and Yemen, coupled with the return of great power rivalries between the US, Russia and China, have brought the world's arms trade into sharp focus. And unsurprisingly, it is a thriving global industry, with the total international trade in arms now worth about $100bn ( £74bn) per year.
C) ‘Indefensible’ puts forward a devastating challenge to the conventional wisdom, which has normalised the existence of the most savage weapons of mass destruction ever known. Far from protecting us, the book shows how the arms trade undermines our security by fanning the flames of war, terrorism and global instability. The book points to ways in which we can combat the arms trade’s malignant influence, reclaim our democracies and reshape our economies.

Question 7

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Dockless transportation

A. The service relies on a combination of GPS and cellular connectivity to track whichever vehicle is being rented, charging users by the minute and immobilising the device wherever it is left at the end of its trip. They’ve exploded in popularity this year, riding the wave of trends like declining car ownership and increasing preference for renting rather than owning outright.
B. The dockless bike does not require a docking station — an expense that could sometimes limit the number of bikes a city could afford. With dockless systems, bicycles can be parked within a defined district at a bike rack or along the sidewalk. Dockless bikes can be located and unlocked using a smartphone app.
C. Citymapper now supports dockless transport options such as Ofo bikes and electric scooters, offering an insight into the future of transport in cities. These transport systems are quickly becoming ubiquitous – but what role can they play in the cities of tomorrow? The company explained that “it’s filling a mobility gap in our cities.”

Question 8

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Illiteracy
A) Illiteracy in India is a problem which has complex dimensions attached to it. Illiteracy in India is more or less concerned with different forms of disparities that exist in the country. There are gender imbalances, income imbalances, state imbalances, caste imbalances, technological barriers which shape the literacy rates that exist in the country.
B) India possesses the largest illiterate population. Literacy rates stood at 82.14 percent for men in 2011 and 65.46 percent for women. This low female literacy is also responsible for the dependency of women on men for activities which requires them to read and write. Thus, this all leads to the formation of a vicious circle.
C) One of the primary reasons for dismal literacy rates is inadequate school facilities. The teaching staff that is employed across the government-run schools is inefficient and unqualified. Another reason which leads to the maximum dropouts among the children is the lack of proper sanitation. A study has stated that 59 percent of the schools do not have drinking water facilities.

Question 9

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Money versus peace of mind

A)
Peace of mind is the most important thing in life, nothing can replace it not even heaps of money. Money is just a commodity, it can be earned as well as spent in exchange of worldly pleasures, but peace of mind is a state.

B) Since we have done away with the barter system, we’ve developed various forms of currency and coins. Money is one of the most important factors determining one’s success and life in today’s world. It is true that 40% of our happiness depends on our actions. Out of the remaining 60%, 50% is via the genes and 10% via uncontrollable factors. You can’t lose the important 40% determiner of your happiness for something called money, can you?
C) Today, everyone is running: some are running after money, some are running after the people they love, some are running after the situations they desire. No one is at a stable position i.e. no one is at peace. Inner peace reflects the peace of mind. In today’s era, everyone is extremely busy in making their lives perfect.

Child Abuse
A) Physically abused children find it difficult relating to their peers and the adults around them. The constant threat of violence at home makes them perpetually vigilant and mistrustful, and they may be overly domineering and aggressive in their attempts to predict and control other people's behaviour.

B) The history of violence against women remains vague in scientific literature. This is, in part, because many kinds of violence against women (specifically rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence) are under-reported, often due to societal norms, taboos, stigma, and the sensitive nature of the subject. It is widely recognized that even today, a lack of reliable and continuous data is an obstacle to forming a clear picture of violence against women.
C) Emotionally abused children exhibit a range of specific signs. They often feel unhappy, frightened and distressed, behave aggressively and antisocially or too maturely for their age, experience difficulties with school attendance and achievement, find it hard to make friends, show signs of physical neglect and malnourishment, experience incontinence and mysterious pains.
