Suddenly, my tour guide grabs my arm and parks me one foot from the train track. "Stay here," he instructs, his black eyes gleaming like obsidian. I am about to witness something extraordinary. As I struggle to see (6), I detect the faint wheeze of a train whistle in the distance. "Rot fai!" a woman calls out urgently. "Train!” frenzied electricity fills the air as vendors (7) wares away from the track. (Apparently, it's a mere eight inches to the safety zone.) Then, like so many Murphy beds, the overhead awnings fold up and back and my face is flooded with sunlight. The train whistle grows louder. In a mere 60 seconds, the track has become (8), a blank canvas of bolts and steel that disappears into the distance. A tourist lingers between the rails and is scolded by a man hauling his eggplants to safety. The safety zone beside the track is now at full capacity, and I find myself squished between two giggly girls in matching school uniforms on one side and a huge tub of shrimp on the other. The ground begins to vibrate. Suddenly, a bright yellow train car (9) and I suck in my gut thinking that the extra inch of space I create might save my life. I watch with (10) as the train glides right in front of our toes and our noses.

Question 11

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Animal abuse
A) The torture of a wedding animal in India can be compared to that of a labour camp. From blind horses to overworked elephants, these creatures have a much harder existence than their momentary presence belies. This kind of wide-ranging animal abuse has no place in modern society. Just because it's entrenched in our traditions doesn't mean it's justified. It's high time we started finding other ways to 'amuse' ourselves, just for the sake of putting on a show.
B) Every other day, a video of animal cruelty surfaces on the internet but all we do is frown and curse the people responsible, and the government that appears to do nothing about it. India has a huge population of stray dogs and with rising incidents of animal torture, it has become a big problem in our country.
C) An intense portrayal of the lives of these animals as they unfold, day-by-day, hour-by-hour, where the tiniest incident may end up having a huge consequence on their future. Their chances of success depend on their own strength of character, their choices and on luck. But these animals do not operate alone – their success or failure will also hinge on how they work with, or against, their own families.

Question 12

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Higher education
A) A Delhi University book recommended for its third-year BCom (Honors) course wants students to know that an email ought to be 'short like a skirt.' Apparently inspired by Winston Churchill's famous quote - "A good speech should be like a woman's skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest" - Prof CB Gupta seems to have interpreted it in his own way in the textbook.
B) Recently, the Savitribai Phule Pune University issued a circular which stated that a student needs to be a pure vegetarian, teetotaller and someone who follows 'Indian traditions and mentality' to qualify for the gold medal. The medal is accompanied with a cash prize of Rs 1 Lakh and is given to a student from science and humanities fields on alternate years. They further said that the award is given by the trust of Yog Maharshi Shelarmama and hence the varsity has no say in deciding these parameters.
C) Months after some of top universities of India such as Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India and University of Hyderabad saw huge unrest by students, a government appointed committee has recommended putting a restriction on the number of years students stay in hostels. The committee has also suggested a cap on the number of years students take to complete their courses.

Question 13

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Cyberbullying
A) Monica Lewinsky is no stranger to cyber-bullying. Back in 1998, she got wrapped up in the media scandal following her affair with then-US President Bill Clinton. Even though that was a time before social media, the Internet had already started showing signs of how lethal it could be through comments sections, emails and blogs full of opinions.
B) Even though it has made life tremendously easy for us, the internet can be a hell of a cruel place sometimes. Things go viral, and without knowing the person or the actual reality, we, the general public 'share' things without realising the actual truth behind them. So, let this be yet another lesson about being judgmental, and how everything you see is not the absolute truth.
C) Online harassment is something plaguing the lives of almost everyone online. The brain-dead people who resort to such things never pause to think what impact their words could have on the receiver. Most of these are just empty trash talk but only the person facing it can understand how scarring and terrifying it can be. Online harassment and bullying need to stop and the perpetrator must be punished so people like him are dissuaded from committing such heinous acts.

Question 14

Direction: In the given question, a theme followed by three passages is given. Determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based on the given theme.
Feminism
A) Feminism comes in a variety of shades, and one thing they all have in common (apart from the desire to promote women's rights, obviously) is that they're all grossly misunderstood. Predominantly by men, many times by women and sometimes by fellow feminists too - presumably because the vessels of our minds are too full of preconceived notions about feminism that lead us to misjudge feminists and their movement entirely.
B) It hurts to see young women not wanting to be labelled as feminists and saying they believe in equality, when feminism as a movement stands on those very roots. The misconception that the movement is against men is wrong. Feminism is not about men vs women. It never was. Feminism, a movement that began as an expression for equality of both genders, has been ridiculed so much, that people don't want to be associated with the word anymore.
C) Actress Kalki Koechlin feels it is unfortunate that the word feminism has gathered a lot of negative feedback with many people not even realising its true meaning. The actress says people often associate feminism with that of 'ranting women' who hate men. "There is a misunderstanding and lack of awareness about the word. Feminism seems to be tagged as a bunch of ranting women or women who are against men. The word feminism is about the equality of gender. A lot of people are feminist but they don't even realise it," Kalki told PTI.

A) The 1998 national census of India estimated the total number of child labourers, aged 4 to 15, to be at 12.6 million, out of a total child population of 253 million in the 5 to 14 age group. However, in 2009–10 a nationwide survey found that the prevalence of child labour had reduced to 4.98 million children (or less than 2% of the children in the 5 to 14 age group).
B) Child marriage is a human rights violation. Despite the presence of laws in this regard, the practice remains widespread, in part, because of persistent poverty and gender inequality. In developing countries, one in every four girls is married before reaching age 18. One in nine is married under age 15.

C) While many parents are emotionally abusive without being violent or sexually abusive, emotional abuse often accompanies physical and sexual abuse. It includes acts of omission (what is not done) e.g. emotional neglect- not expressing or showing love and affection and commission as well as (what is done) e.g. rejection, humiliation, insults, setting unreasonable expectations or restricting opportunities for the child to learn, socialise or explore.
