  1. An individual above the age of 60 is known as a senior citizen. The 2021 World Senior Citizen Day was the 32nd World Senior Citizen Day.
  2. The theme for World Senior Citizen Day 2021 was "Pandemic: Do they change how we address age and aging?"
  3. This theme was decided due to the ongoing pandemic, due to which many people had to live in their homes for a long time.
  4. Normal outdoor life came to a halt. Senior citizens who used to go out and spend some time of the day had to stay in their homes for the whole day. Also, it became difficult for them to earn and maintain the budget of their house.

History of World Senior Citizens Day

  • The famous US President, Franklin Roosevelt, signed the Social Security Act on 14 August 1935.
  • Then, the former US president Ronald Reagan officially accepted the world citizens day on 19 August 1988. After signing a proclamation, 21 August was recognized as the World Senior Citizens Day in the US.
  • After a few years, other countries also adopted the day to pay respect to the senior citizens.
