Ann Davison, the first woman to sail single-handedly to the Atlantic Ocean, was all set to begin her journey of hopes, aspirations and journey of troubles, when she received a gift pack. It was a Christmas gift from her friends. It contained greeting cards and small gifts that, instead of cheering her, made her feel lonelier.

Ann Davison had a passion for aviation and was among the few Americans to become a pilot. Her marriage to Frank Davison had changed her life. They had bought a motor sailor named Reliance. Ann lost her husband in a tragedy with ‘Reliance’. After that she got a job and a boat ‘Felicity Ann’ which created in her the desire to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.

That day, the boat was making only a half knot. So, she ran the engine for a while and this improved her spirits. She decided to run it a little every day, while the ocean was calm. It kept the engine from corroding and the sound was good for her morale.

She was waiting for a little wind to blow. But there was a squall and the boat, Felicity Ann was heeled over, dangerously. She was discovering the learning of many other long-distance sailors: the single hander’s main enemies were lack of confidence, discouragement and loneliness. Ann tried hard to reef the mainsail but was unsuccessful. She groped her way on deck and rested.

साहित्य का आधार जीवन है। इसी नींव पर साहित्य की दीवार खडी होती है। उसकी अटारियाँ, मीनार और गुम्बंद  बनते हैं। लेकिन बुनियाद मिट्टी के नीचे दबी पड़ी है। जीवन परमात्मा की स्रष्टि है। इसलिए सुबोध है, सुगम है और मर्यादाओं से परिमित है जीवन परमात्मा को अपने कामों का जवाबदेह है या नहीं हमे मालूम नहीं, लेकिन साहित्य तो मनुष्य के सामने जवाबदेह है। इसके लिए कानून है जिनसे वह इधर -उधर नहीं जा सकता। मनुष्य जीवन पर्यन्त आनंद की खोज में लगा रहता है। किसी को वह रत्न द्रव्य में मिलता है, किसी को भरे-पूरे परिवार में, किसी को लम्बे-चौड़े भवन में ,किसी को ऐश्वर्य में। लेकिन साहित्य का आनंद इस आनंद से ऊँचा है। उसका आधार सुन्दर और सत्य है। वास्तव में सच्चा आनंद सुन्दर और सत्य से मिलता है, उसी आनंद को दर्शाना, वही आनंद उत्पन्न करना साहित्य का उद्देश्य है।

आज का मानव प्राचीन युग के मानव से बिलकुल अलग बन गया है l आज के युग को विज्ञान के चमत्कारों का युग माना जाता है l विज्ञान दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है- वि + ज्ञान l जिसका अर्थ होता है किसी वस्तु का विशेष ज्ञान l आज के युग के विज्ञान की उन्नति को देखकर संसार चकित हो गया है l विज्ञान को विवेक का द्वार माना जाता है l अपने भौतिक सुखों के लिए ही मानव विज्ञान की शरण में आया है और विज्ञान मानव के लिए कल्पवृक्ष सिद्ध हुआ है l विज्ञान के बहुत से अदभुत आविष्कारों को देखकर मनुष्य ने दांतों तले ऊँगली दबा ली है l विज्ञान की चकाचौंध से मनुष्य स्तब्ध रह गया है l विज्ञान और जीवन का घनिष्ट सम्बन्ध होता है l विज्ञान ने ही मानव जीवन को सुखमय बनाया है l किसी विद्वान का कहना है कि विज्ञान ने अंधों को आंखे और बहरों को सुनने के लिए कान दिए हैं l उसने जीवन को दीर्घ बनाया है और डर को कम कर दिया है l विज्ञान ने पागलपन को वश में कर लिया है और रोगों का नाश किया है l विज्ञान को मानव के लिए वरदान भी माना गया है और अभिशाप भी l विज्ञान ने मनुष्य को अनेक सुख प्रदान किये हैं l जीवन के प्रत्येक क्रियाकलाप में विज्ञान का योगदान रहा है l विज्ञान ने मनुष्य की कल्पनाओं को सच कर दिखाया है l विज्ञान ने हेलिकोप्टर, हवाई जहाज जैसे यंत्रों का अविष्कार करके मनुष्य के सुख को चर्म सीमा तक पहुंचा दिया है l
