21 March is commemorated as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination every year after the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted resolution 2142 (XXI) on October 26, 1966. The day observes the struggle people faced to end the system of Apartheid in South Africa. The international day also underlines the importance of mobilizing efforts to end all forms of racial discrimination prevalent today.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination History

On March 21, 1960, the police opened fire in Sharpeville, South Africa, during a peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid pass laws. 69 people were killed in the incident.

Hence, commencing March 21, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the General Assembly launched a program of activities to honour the people who lost their lives fighting for equal human rights and democracy during Apartheid in South Africa.
