The process is commonly referred to as breathing or pulmonary ventilation. The respiratory system is made up of the lungs and the respiratory tract. Steps in Respiration

Breathing or pulmonary ventilation is the process of breathing in outside air and exhaling air that is rich in carbon dioxide. Gases move across the alveolar membrane through diffusion. The transport of gases through the blood happens. Between the tissues and blood, carbon dioxide and oxygen are diffused. Cells utilize oxygen for catabolic processes, which emit carbon dioxide.

The stages of cellular respiration are glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, citric acid or Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. The steps involved in Respiration are as follows:

  • Pulmonary ventilation involves drawing in the atmospheric air and releasing carbon dioxide-rich air.
  • The diffusion of gases takes place across the alveolar membrane.
  • Transport of gases by the blood.
  • Diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the tissues and blood.
  • Oxygen is utilized by the cells for catabolic reactions, which releases carbon dioxide.
