Updated on: November 9th, 2023

The difference between Tropism and Nastic Movement arises as Tropism is influenced by the stimulus’s direction, whereas the stimulus’s direction does not influence Nastic Movement. Tropism and Nastic Movement are plant movements in response to external stimuli.

Difference between Tropism and Nastic Movement

The difference between tropism and nastic movement has been explained in the table below:

Tropism movement Nastic movement
Tropism is a response to stimuli that arrives from one direction. Nastic gestures or movements are non-directional responses to stimuli, such as heat and temperature.
Tropism is a directional motion. The biggest characteristic of the nastic movement is that the direction of the stimulus does not control movements.
Positive tropism denotes the plant component’s movement toward the stimulus. In contrast, if the plant portion’s movement is away from the stimulus, it is referred to as negative tropism. Touch (Seismonastic), light, temperature (Thermonastic), and chemicals may induce nastic movement. Whatever the stimulus path, the gestures often happen in a specific path.
Examples – Phototropism, Geotropism, etc. Examples – Venus flytrap’s movement.

Summary:
