We can show that chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis using the starch experiment. Experiment on chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis are:
- Prepare a potted plant with variegated leaves such as croton and place it in a dark place without direct sunlight for 3 days. This stops photosynthesis and weakens the plant.
- The plants are then placed in the sun for 6-8 hours.
- Plants can now photosynthesize and produce starch.
- Mark the green part of the leaf and draw it on a piece of paper. Mark the area in green and yellow.
- The green part contains chlorophyll, the yellow part does not.
- Leaves are soaked in boiling alcohol to decolorize. The leaves slowly lose their green color and turn into alcohol.
- Soak the discolored leaves in the iodine solution. Remove the leaves from the iodine solution and rinse with distilled water.
- Remove the leaves from the distilled water and place them in a Petri dish.
Observation of chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis
- Bi-colored areas can be seen on the leaves.
- Reddish brown and bluish-black.
Conclusion:
- From this, we can conclude that the previously green parts of the leaves have become blue-black and the yellow parts have become reddish-brown.
- Green leaves contain chlorophyll. Therefore, they photosynthesize to produce starch, which becomes blue-black with iodine.
Summary:
Write an experiment to show that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
A starch experiment to show that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis is mentioned above along with observation and conclusion. Photosynthesis is a process where phototrophs convert light energy to chemical energy that is used to fuel cellular activities.
