The concept behind Satyagraha was the demand of the search for truth and using non-violence to fight for your cause. Gandhiji organized the Satyagraha movement in Champaran, Bihar, where he convinced the peasants to stand against the oppressive plantation system. Later, he organized a similar Satyagraha movement to support the peasants from the Kheda district of Gujarat struggling against crop failure and a plague. Gandhiji strongly believed that the concept of non-violence could unite the country.
In contrast to violent resistance, which aims to injure the antagonist, the essence of Satyagraha is that it strives to end conflicts without damaging the parties involved. The Civil Rights Movement in the United States, Nelson Mandela’s fight against apartheid in South Africa, and several other social justice and related movements were all influenced by the Satyagraha principle.
