World Ozone Day or International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer

  • It is observed on September 16th September every year.
  • The day reminds you of the signature of the Montreal Protocol on substances that exhaust the ozone layer. On this day, people from all over the world should adhere to the Montreal protocol to join conversations and seminars.
  • Life is not possible on earth without the ozone layer. It is found in the upper layers of the atmosphere and is a highly reactive gas. Protects life on earth from absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation and, therefore, is also known as an ozone shield. Ultraviolet rays can cause various skin diseases.

History:

  • On 22 March 1985, the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer was adopted and signed by 28 countries.
  • The Montreal Protocol was signed on September 16, 1987, on substances that exhaust the ozone layer and mark the international day for storing the ozone layer. The United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 49/114 in 1987 chooses this day.
  • Basically, it is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by reducing the production of substances that should be responsible for the exhaustion of the ozone layer. Let's say that the Montreal Protocol was implemented on 1 January 1989.
  • In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed on September 16th, the International Day for the Conservation of the Ozone layer, which commemorates the date of signature, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on substances that exhaust the ozone layer ( Resolution 49/114).
  • In 2012 the 20th anniversary of the Montreal protocol was held. Moreover, on this day, educators teach their students the advantages of the benefits of the ozone layer, and special events and activities are organized to spread consciousness.
  • The Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol have become the first treaties in the United Nations history to reach universal ratification on September 16, 2009.

  • The theme for the celebration of this year's World Ozone Day to be marked on 16th September is "Montreal Protocol - Keeping us, our food and vaccines cool".
