Amid raising the environmental concerns because of pollution and climate change, The purpose of World Environment Day is to spread awareness about the threat to the environment and measures that can be taken to tackle this issue. To inspire positive changes in the environment, the first Environment Day was celebrated in 1974.

The theme for last year's World Environment Day was - Ecosystem Restoration, as addressing climate change and species extinction is critical to ecosystem restoration. The United Nations decided in 1987 to rotate the host country for this day's ceremonies. In 2021, Pakistan hosted the global host of the day in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

History of World Environment Day 2022

World Environment Day has been around since 1974. The concept of World Environment Day has conceived 50 years ago at the Stockholm United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It sprang from the realisation that we must take action to protect the air, land, and water on which we all rely. In a message for World Environment Day 2022, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, Inger Andersen remarked. Participants endorsed a set of principles, the Stockholm Declaration and Action Plan, and several other resolutions at the meeting. The United Nations Environment Programme was also established at the Stockholm Conference (UNEP). Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, attended the first United Nations Conference on Environment in 1972.

World Environment Day has been observed annually since 1974, and it has grown in importance as a platform for advocating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals' environmental goals. Each year, nearly 150 countries take part in the festivities, which are organised by the UNEP. Environmental causes are championed by large corporations, non-governmental organisations, towns, governments, and celebrities all around the world.

Significance and Importance of World Environment Day 2022

The major goal of World Environment Day is to raise awareness about environmental issues and to remind people that nature should not be taken for granted. According to the United Nations, this day gives a chance to extend the basis for informed opinion and responsible behaviour by communities, businesses, and individuals in the preservation and enhancement of the environment.
