  • On September 21, the world celebrates World Alzheimer’s Day with the aim of raising awareness of the disease, common symptoms and risk factors.
  • This day draws attention to the cause and severity of Alzheimer's disease, and it is celebrated throughout the month in some countries/regions.
  • Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease that gradually deteriorates memory and cognitive abilities. It is the main cause of dementia in the elderly. It is also a progressive disease that causes brain cells to degenerate and die.

History and significance:

  • World Alzheimer's Day is observed to highlight the warning symptoms of dementia and the necessity of getting a diagnosis as soon as possible. The day aims to create awareness about the importance of discussing dementia and to debunk its myths.
  • The disease is named after German psychiatrist and pathologist Alois Alzheimer, who first diagnosed the disease in a 50-year-old woman in 1901.
  • Alzheimer’s disease contributes to 60-70% of dementia cases and it is estimated that in the coming decades, the numbers are set to multiply.
  • The neurodegenerative disease usually starts slowly and progressively worsens. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events. Patients forget the name of the place they live in; they fail to identify their family members and long-time friends.
  • As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, self-neglect and behavioural issues.
  • Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s disease cannot be reversed, however, with more awareness, family members of the patient can learn to manage the condition.
