Why did Gandhiji Call off the Non-cooperation Movement?

Mahatma Gandhi called off the Non-Cooperation Movement (NCM) after the Chauri Chaura incident on 04 February 1922. Many protestors who participated in the non-cooperation movement were fired upon at Chauri Chaura. This made the protestors retaliate with violence, and they surrounded, attacked, and eventually burned down the police station in the area.

Reason Gandhiji called Off the Non-Cooperation Movement

The Chauri Chaura incident led to the killing of 22 policemen in total. Mahatma Gandhi was against the violence of any form. Seeing the movement take a violent turn, he withdrew it immediately.

  • This political campaign aimed to get Indians to revoke and stop working with the British government.
  • This movement’s main goal was to demand self-rule from the British throne.

  • The protests took a non-violent stance. The leaders urged Indians of all ranks to refuse to cooperate with the government by giving up their titles, government jobs, appointed seats, etc.
  • The movement successfully created a lot of tension among British officials.
  • However, the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922 made Gandhiji decide to take the movement back.
  • Congress was not in favor of the decision. However, Gandhiji stood his ground and rescinded the movement.
