Why are mitochondria called the powerhouse of cells?

Mitochondria are called the powerhouse of cells as the whole cell and body obtain energy because of it. In the cytoplasm of the cell, mitochondria are double-membrane-bound semiautonomous organelles that have their own ribosomes and genetic material. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is produced from the meal using the proteins that are created by the proteins in the mitochondria.
The body and every cell receive energy from this ATP, which serves as the currency of the cell. Be a result, mitochondria are referred to as the cell’s powerhouse.

Functions of Mitochondria
- The production of energy by oxidative phosphorylation is the mitochondria’s most significant job. Additionally, it contributes to the following process:
- Controls the cell’s metabolic activities.
- Encourages the development of new cells and cell division
- Aids in the liver cells’ ammonia detoxification
- Contributes significantly to apoptosis, or programmed cell death
- Responsible for producing several hormones like testosterone and estrogen as well as specific blood components
- Helps to maintain a sufficient concentration of calcium ions inside the cell’s compartments.
- Additionally, it participates in a number of biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, signaling, and senescence. It also regulates the cell cycle.
