Who wrote the original Constitution of India?

The original Constitution of India was handwritten by Prem Behari Narain Raizada. Raizada spent six months handwriting 395 articles, 8 schedules, as well as a preamble in both English & Hindi over his desk at the Constitution Hall (now the Constitution Club). For Hindi calligraphy, he utilised Hindoo dip-pen nibs from Birmingham and used a total of 303 pens.

The Constituent Assembly established a Drafting Committee on August 29, 1947, intending to create a draught constitution for India. The Constitution for the newly independent country was completed after 11 sessions and many discussions and modifications. It was to be handwritten in flowing italic font at the request of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The work was assigned to renowned calligrapher Prem Behari Narain Raizada (Saxena). The bespectacled Raizada worked for Govan Brothers and has a degree from St. Stephen's College in New Delhi. The remarkable calligraphist received a degree from St. Stephen’s College of the University of Delhi.
