The writer of the book Gulamgiri is Jyotirao Govindrao Phule. He was born in 1827. Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, also known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, was an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer, and writer from Maharashtra. He put a great deal of emphasis on emancipating women and ending caste and untouchability. Jyotirao Phule was also one of the first to criticize the caste system with his book, Gulamgiri.

Gulamgiri by Mahatma Jotiba Phule is regarded as one of the earliest tracts opposing the caste system. The 16-part essay and four lyrical pieces, published in 1885, criticize the concept of caste and are written in the style of a conversation between Jotiba and a figure he refers to only as Dhondiba. The book was written in Marathi with an English introduction and has been translated as “slavery.”

Jyotiba Phule wrote Gulamgiri to establish a link between lower-caste Indians and enslaved Americans treated as lower castes in America. Thus, he connected the plight of black people in America and India’s lower castes. Phule is best known for educating women and people from lower castes. He attempted to highlight the injustices done to lower castes & how they were treated like slaves simply because of their caste. Because of their dark skin, people were treated like slaves and faced severe discrimination.
