Dravid was born into a Marathi-speaking Brahmin family in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His family eventually moved to Bangalore, Karnataka, where he was raised. He can speak Marathi. Sharad Dravid, David's father, worked at a company that made jams and preserves, earning him the nickname Jammy. His mother Pushpa was an architectural professor at Bangalore's University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). Dravid's younger brother is named Vijay.
Rahul Dravid attended St. Joseph's Boys High School in Bangalore and graduated from St. Joseph's College of Commerce in Bangalore with a degree in commerce.
