Jawaharlal Nehru once said that Dams are the Temples of Modern India. He gave much importance to dams because they could play a major role in integrating agricultural development and the rural economy with the fast growth of the urban economy. One of the biggest gravity dams in the world is the Bhakra Nangal Dam, located in Himachal Pradesh on the River Sutlej.

Who Proclaimed Dams as the Temples of Modern India?
As mentioned above, Jawaharlal Nehru announced that dams are the temples of modern India. He believed that agriculture is an integral part of India’s economy, and thus the rural areas (the hub of agriculture) need to be well-connected with urban India. And the dams could play the role of uniting or merging agricultural development with the fast-paced industrialization and growth of the urban economy.
