Who is the present Chairman of the National Commission on farmers?

Shri MS Swaminathan is the present Chairman of the National Farmers Commission. The National Commission for Farmers was established on November 18, 2004, and has presented 5 different reports. MS Swaminathan, also known as the father of the green revolution in India, has contributed a lot to agriculture in India. He is an agricultural scientist and eminent geneticist. He transformed Indian agriculture.

  • MS Swaminathan entered medical school in 1943, during the Bengal famine. After seeing the dread of the Bengal Famine, he changed his mind and turned to agricultural research.
  • He finished the post-graduate Zoology course at Maharaja's College, Trivandrum, and received his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science. He completed postgraduate studies in the field of plant breeding and genetics.
  • Even though he cleared the UPSC exams and was selected for IPS, he chose a scholarship to Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands to pursue research in potato genetics.
  • He received his doctorate from the Cambridge University School of Agriculture. He returned to India in 1954 and continued his research at IARI.
  • The Green Revolution, an initiative of Shri MS Swaminathan, refers to a series of steps and technological transfers in the agricultural sector that caused a large increase in farm productivity.
  • Among the steps taken were developing high-yielding varieties of cereals and developing pest-resistant crops using hybrid seeds with improved genetics.

The present Chairman of the National Commission on farmers is Shri MS Swaminathan. It was established on 18 November 2004. He was the Director General of ICAR from 1972 to 1979, during which he created the National Authority for Plant Animal and Fish Genetic Resources in India.
