The Missile Woman of India is Dr Tessy Thomas. She is the Director General of Aeronautical Systems, an Indian scientist and the former Project Director for Agni-IV missile in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). For India’s Agni-V project, Dr Tessy Thomas serves as both project director & key scientist. Additionally, she was a major contributor to the creation of Agni-V. After the missiles she helped design, the media also likes to refer to her as Agniputri, which means born of fire or daughter of fire.

Missile Woman of India

Tessy Thomas, an Indian scientist who served as the Director General of Aeronautical Systems and was previously the Project Director for the Agni-IV missile at the Defense Research and Development Organization, was born in April 1963. She is the first woman scientist in Indian history to be in the lead of a missile program.

She pursued B.Tech from Government Engineering College, Thrissur, and an M.Tech from the Institute of Armament Technology, Pune. She was born in Alappuzha, Kerala, to a Syrian Christian family. At present, She is a scientist at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). She joined DRDO in 1988 and worked on designing and developing the new generation ballistic missile, Agni.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam appointed Tessy Thomas for the Agni Project. Besides, she was the associate project director of the 3,000 km range Agni-III missile project. She received the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for her contribution to the field of missile technology. Tessy Thomas was also awarded Dr Thomas Cangan Leadership Award at the Faculty of Management Studies – Institute of Rural Management, Jaipur, in 2018.
