He made significant contributions to ecology and taught ecology at Banaras Hindu University. He initiated a postgraduate course in Ecology and received numerous awards for his efforts, including the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Award in Environment and Ecology.

  • He began his ecology education and research at the Banaras Hindu University’s Department of Botany in Varanasi.
  • His work paved the way for researchers to better understand tropical communities and their succession, plant productivity and population responses to environmental change, and nutrient cycling in tropical forest and grassland ecosystems.
  • He established the first postgraduate ecology course in India and laid the groundwork for ecology in the country.
