One of the Indian Citpavan Brahmans of Maharashtra, Mahadev Govind Ranade, was a judge on the Bombay High Court, a renowned historian, and an active participant in social and economic reform movements.
- He was born in Niphad, India, on January 18, 1842, and died in Poona (now Pune), India, on January 16, 1901.
- Ranade fought for social change in child marriage, widow remarriage, and women’s rights during his seven years as a judge in Bombay.
- Ranade developed an interest in the history of the Marathas, a militaristic Hindu ethnic group that founded the independent kingdom of Maharashtra, after being appointed history instructor at Elphinstone College in Bombay (1866).
- His publication ‘Rise of the Maratha Power’ came out in 1900.
