Who Conquered the Avanti Kingdom?

The kingdom of Avanti was conquered by Shishunaga by defeating Avantivardhana or Nandivardhana, who was the last king of the Pradyota dynasty. Avanti, a very ancient state, is located in what is now Madhya Pradesh, India. It was part of the Malwa region. Avanti was divided into northern and southern parts by the Vindhya mountains. The kingdom was on the land trade routes of southern and northern India and the Arabian Sea port of Barkachha.

Conquering of Avanti Kingdom

Avanti reached its zenith during the 1178–1192 reign of King Prithviraj II. He supported the arts and helped construct some of Avanti’s most stunning temples.

  • Their sister, Mitravinda, got married to Lord Krishna.
  • During the Mahabharata war, Vinda and Anuvinda fought to defend their friend Duryodhana.
  • Chandragupta of Magadha, who established the Mauryan dynasty, conquered and annexed Avanti into his realm in the fourth century BCE.
  • One of the seven holy cities of the Hindus, Ujjayini was renowned for its wealth and beauty and served as a focal point for early Buddhism and Jainism.
  • The Shungas, the Andhrabhrtyas, and the Shakas fought over Avanti following the fall of the Magadha Empire.
  • Chandra Gupta II drove out the Shakas and held court in Ujjayini in 390 AD.
