Which of the following is not a physical change?
By BYJU'S Exam Prep
Updated on: September 25th, 2023
(a) Melting of solids to liquid
(b) Vaporization of liquids to gases
(c) Liquefication of gases to liquids
(d) Degradation of matter
Degradation of the matter is not a physical change. Because they result in substances that are wholly new chemical compounds, rusting, burning, cooking, and rotting are all further sorts of chemical transformations.
Why Degradation of the Matter is not a Physical Change?
- In the degradation of a matter a complete new chemical compound or substance is formed.
- For example, burned wood becomes ash, carbon dioxide, and water.
- Iron transforms into a combination of various hydrated iron oxides and hydroxides when it is in contact with water.
- This stage happens when the material is exposed to abiotic elements in the outdoor environment and it weakens the material’s structure, allowing for further degradation.
- The matter’s chemical makeup is altered as a result, and the new element is completely distinct from the old one.
Physical Change |
Chemical Change |
The substance changes physically whereas the arrangement of the molecules does not change. |
When a substance undergoes a chemical transition, and its molecular composition is changed altogether. Chemical changes include the synthesis of the new compounds. |
A transient change is physical. |
A permanent change is chemical. |
It solely affects the shape and size. |
It affect the substance’s composition along with physical and chemical properties. |
There is very little energy absorbed. |
Energy is absorbed and evolved in a chemical reaction. |
Summary:
Which of the following is not a physical change? (a) Melting of solids to liquid (b) Vaporization of liquids to gases (c) Liquefication of gases to liquids (d) Degradation of matter
Matter degradation is not a physical transformation. It results in substances that are chemical compounds. The mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of the material are significantly altered during the degradation of matter.
