Both Gond and Bhil are the largest tribe in India. Apart from them, the other tribes that fall under the category of the largest tribe in India are Minas, Santhals, Oraons, Bodos, and Mundas. According to the census of 2011, the tribal population makes up about 8.6 percent of India’s total population. The communities that are very old and among the oldest inhabitants of the sub-continent are referred to as tribes.

The total number of tribal communities recognized in India is sixty-two. Odisha is the state with the highest tribal population. In contrast, the states like Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Puducherry have no tribal population.

There are two types of tribes based on positive characteristics namely permanent traits and acquired traits. The characteristics of permanent traits are they include language, region, physical characteristics, and ecological habitat. On the other hand, acquired traits are classified based on the mode of livelihood, the extent of incorporation into Hindu society, or a combination of both.
