Smallest Sea Turtle in India
The Olive Ridley Turtles are the smallest and the most abundant found sea turtles in the world. The species is recognized as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. The coast of Orissa in India is the largest mass nesting site for the Olive-ridley, followed by the coasts of Mexico and Costa Rica.
In India, the three river mouths where the Olive Ridley Turtles come together for mass nesting are the Dhamra River, Rushikulya River and Devi River. Odisha’s Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is known as the world’s largest rookery (a colony of breeding animals) of sea turtles. Gahirmatha is the world’s largest nesting beach for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.
