There are 13 major ports in India which are as follows: Kolkata Port, Cochin Port, Mumbai Port, Paradip Port, New Mangalore Port, Tuticorin port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Kandla Port, Mormugao Port, Visakhapatnam Port, Chennai Port, Ennore Port, and Port Blair Port.

  • Mumbai Port is the second oldest port in India followed by Chennai port which is the third oldest and the 2nd largest port in India.
  • The Port of Kolkata, officially known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust (previously Kolkata Port Trust), is India’s only riverine major port.
  • It is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, approximately 203 kilometres (126 miles) from the sea.
  • The Partition of Bengal (1947), the shrinkage of the port’s hinterland, and the economic stagnation in eastern India all contributed to the port’s declining importance after independence.
