Which is the Major Cause of Land Degradation in Punjab?

By Ruchika|Updated : September 5th, 2022

Punjab has very fertile soil which is crucial to yielding good quality crops. However, land degradation has become a problem in the last few years. The major reason for land degradation in Punjab is over-irrigation which leads to an excess of moisture in the soil, ultimately leading to degrading its quality.

Major Cause of Land Degradation in Punjab

In Punjab, the use of tubewells to irrigate the fields is very common. Farmers often over irrigate their fields in order to improve the moisture and make it conducive to high-moisture crops. However, over-irrigation is becoming one of the major causes of land degradation in Punjab as it increases the saline levels of the soil.

As plants do not grow properly in fields with high salinity, over-irrigation is harmful to the soil as well as the yield. Depending on the drainage quality of soils, over-irrigation can also cause excess or depletion of oxygen, none of which is an ideal condition for crops to grow. The roots of the crops also suffer because of excess water in the soil. Hence, over-irrigation is the major cause because of which Punjab's land is degrading.
