Which Is The Longest Cell Of the Human Body?

By Jyoti Bisht|Updated : June 20th, 2022

The nerve cells or the neurons are the longest cells of the body, specialized in carrying the functions of transmitting and conveying messages in the form of chemical signals. The neurons are characterized according to their functions. There is a sensory neuron and a motor neuron. The sensory neuron responds the external stimuli such as touch, light etc, and carries the signal to the brain or spinal cord. The brain or spinal cord sends the signals to the motor neuron directing the action such as muscle contraction, muscle extension etc.

Why Is Neuron Called The Longest Cell Of Human Body?

The neurons constitute the communication inside the body, it receives and transmits the information. It carries information from the brain to all the parts of the body. Their length can be upto 3 feet.

Structure Of A Neuron

The neuron is a cell, its body is known as “soma”. It comprises dendrites and axons an essential part of transmitting the information. The dendrites are beneficial in receiving the signal and transferring the same to the axon and through soma. The axons can connect to another axon through synapses. The synapses are the places of connection of axons and dendrites. The cell body consists of all the organelles.

Salient Features Of Neuron

Take a look at the salient features of neurons to gain a deeper understanding of the nerve cells and the neuron structure. The salient features centering on the neuron and other details have been presented here.

  • The neurons are the main structure and functional unit of the nervous system.
  • They carry nerve impulses from one part of the body to another part.
  • The neuron is called the longest cell of the human body as it covers the entire body, and transmits the information.
  • A synapse is a specialized site where nerve impulses are transmitted between two neurons or a neuron and a gland.

Which is the longest cell of the human body?

The nerve cell or the neurons are the longest cell of the human body, as it is the basic unit of transferring nerve impulses and information from one part of the body to another. There are sensory and motor neurons. The sensory neurons respond to external stimuli and carry impulses to the brain. The motor neuron transmits impulses from the brain to the muscles.
