Aquarium – Natural Ecosystem or Not?

Any size vivarium with at least one transparent side can be called an aquarium if it is used to house and exhibit aquatic plants and animals. Aquaria is used by fishkeepers to keep fish, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, turtles, and amphibian-like reptiles.

The Latin word aqua, which means “water,” is combined with the suffix – arium, which means “a place for relating to,” to form the term aquarium, which was first used by English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse. Therefore, an aquarium can be thought of as a closed artificial ecosystem where both fish and plants can find a home where they can grow and develop in a healthy and balanced way.

What is an Ecosystem?

The interaction between living constituents and the non-living constituents in an area together is called an ecosystem. It consists of biotic components and abiotic components. Biotic components comprise all living organisms whereas abiotic components are the physical factors like temperature, rainfall, wind, soil, and minerals.
