Which City is Known as the Garden City of India?

The city of Bangalore is often referred to as the garden city of India. Why? This is because of Bangalore’s climate which is mostly cool throughout the year with only occasional heat waves during summers. It is said that the city received this unique nickname of the garden city from the 24th Maharaja of the kingdom of Mysore - Krishna Raja Wodeyar.

In 2017, the government of India announced that it would make Bangalore the first garden city of India with an aim to reduce pollution and traffic congestion by increasing greenery in the city.

History of the Garden City of India

A ruler of Mysore called Hyder Ali liked the climate of Bangalore and planted a garden called Lalbagh to add to its beauty. Even during the British rule, a lot of greenery was added to the city which earned it the nickname of the garden city of India.
