Where was the First Cotton Mill in India Established?

The first cotton mill in India was established in Bombay in 1854. It was a spinning mill. With this, Bombay became an important port for the export of raw cotton from India to England and China. Later on, cotton mills were established in Ahmedabad in 1861 and in Kanpur in 1862.

About Cotton Mills in India

There are more than 1500 cotton mills in India wherein 80% are in the private sector and the rest in the public and cooperative sector. India exports cotton to several countries such as Russia, France, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, etc.

When the first cotton mill was introduced in India, most workers in the spinning departments were women. On the other hand, the weaving departments were comprised mostly of men workers. By 1900, the number of cotton mills increased in Bombay, and most of them were established by Parsi and Gujarati businessmen.
