History of Rolan Garros
- Referred as Roland Garros in English is an international tournament from the calendar and a part of France heritage. In 1891, its legend started before 128 years.
- The Roland Garros story started with the construction of the Championnat de France, referred to as the French Clay-Court Championships or the French Championship in English. In the beginning, it was for the French club members who were the players. The French national championship was first held in the Stade Francais in the year 1891 as a interclub competition for men. The H.Briggs who stayed at Paris was the first winner.
- In 1897, singles matche was started for women to the tournament play. There were four entries only for the singles tournament of women. In 1902, the mixed doubles event started and after five years, the doubles began for women. It was not conducted from 1915 - 1919 due to World War I. In 1925, the big change came to the tournament as it was open to players from various countries which led to the establishment of the “French Open”.
- In 1891 - 1924, the tournament was conducted at locations alternating among the Racing Club de France’s Croix-Catelan, the Parc de Saint-Cloud and the Stade Francais grounds. In this era, Max Decugis was the player who won about eight titles in 1903 - 1914.
