The Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta (now called Kolkata) received India’s first computer in 1955. India had spent Rs. 10 lahks to purchase its first computer, and it was also acknowledged as a sizable number-crunching device. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai created the first computer in India, known as TIFRAC (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Automatic Calculator).

Installation of First Computer in India
The final machine’s development began in 1955, and Jawaharlal Nehru officially commissioned it and gave it the name TIFRAC in 1960. Until 1965, the full machine was in use.
- India entered the computer age in 1955 with the release of the HEC-2M.
- The HEC-2M computer was developed in England by A.D. Booth.
- The first institution to benefit from the privilege was the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Calcutta (currently Kolkata).
- Param is the name of the first supercomputer developed by scientists in India. The first locally constructed supercomputer, known as Param Shivay, was installed by IIT (BHU).
First Supercomputer in India
It is an acronym for “PARALLEL Machine”. Param was created by Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar.
- He created the PARAM 8000, the first supercomputer in India, in 1991.
- He constructed the National Param Supercomputing Facility (NPSF) based on the PARAM series and produced the PARAM 10000 in 1998.
