Directory Rule of France

The Directory rule of France refers to the rule of the five-member committee from 1795 to 1799. While in rule, the committee worked on eliminating the Jacobin Reign of Terror. The Directory was overthrown by Napolean Bonaparte in the Coup of 18 Brumaire, who replaced it with the Consulate. During the time it lasted, the Directory was in constant wars with many foreign coalitions.

  • The Directory focused on terminating the excesses of the Jacobin Regime of Terror in the first two years
  • Prevention of the mass executions
  • Relaxed measures against exiled royalists and priests
  • The Jacobin political club was closed and the government crushed an armed rebellion planned by the Jacobins
  • An early socialist revolutionary, François-Nol Babef, was known as the “Grachas Babef”.
  • But after discovering a royal conspiracy involving a major general, Jean-Charles Pichegrou, the charge of new councils was taken by Jacobins.
  • He tightened measures against the Church and migrants and added two seats in the Directory, disappointingly splitting it.
