In India, local government refers to governmental entities that are not on the state level. In the federal republic of India, there are three levels of government: national, state, and municipal. In addition to each state having its own local government laws, local governments are recognized and protected under the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments. Urban localities, covered by the 74th amendment to the Constitution, have Nagar Palika but draw their authority from the various state governments, whereas the 73rd amendment to the Constitution established the Panchayati raj system for rural localities. Organizations such as local bodies help individuals exercise their right to self-government.
