What is the minimum age of Lok Sabha members?

The minimum age of Lok Sabha members should not be less than 25 years of age as of the date of scrutiny of nomination papers. A Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha is the representative of the people of India in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India.

  • Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by direct election based on adult voting.
  • The Parliament of India is bicameral with two chambers; Rajya Sabha (Upper House, i.e., Council of States) and Lok Sabha (Lower House, i.e., House of the People).

Lok Sabha Members - Minimum Age Limit

According to Article 84 of the Constitution, a person is eligible to be a member of Parliament provided that:

  • He is a citizen of India.
  • completed 30 years in the case of Rajya Sabha and 25 years in the case of Lok Sabha

A person must fulfill all the following conditions to become a member of the Lok Sabha;

  • Must be a citizen of India.
  • Must not be younger than 25 years old.
  • Must be a voter of any Parliamentary Constituency in India.
  • A candidate of a recognized political party needs one proposer from his constituency for his nomination.
  • A candidate running requires ten proposers.
  • Candidates must put down a $25,000 security deposit.

A person wouldn't be qualified to serve in the Lok Sabha if they;

  • Holds any profit position under the Indian government (other than an office authorized by the Parliament of India by law).
  • He is bankrupt and mentally unbalanced.
  • He is no longer an Indian citizen.
  • He is thus disqualified by any law passed by the Parliament of India.
  • He is thus disqualified for defection.
