Saliva production is the salivary glands’ primary function. Our brain sends messages to the salivary glands to generate saliva whenever we sight or smell food.

The gland’s primary job is to make, store, and then release saliva as needed.

Water and digestive aids are mixed together in saliva. Saliva also maintains moisture in the mouth and other regions of the digestive system.

Humans have three pairs of salivary glands:

  1. Parotid glands are found behind the mouth, in front of, and beneath the ear.
  2. The sublingual glands are found on the floor of the mouth, underneath the tongue.
  3. Submaxillary or submandibular glands are situated on either side of the face, beneath and in front of the lower jaw, at the back of the mouth.

Functions of Salivary Glands

1) Lubrication and binding of food: Saliva aids in lubricating food as well as the mouth and oesophagus to ensure that food moves through them smoothly.

2) Makes the dry food material soluble

3) It maintains oral hygiene

4) Saliva contains amylases, which break down starch. So, the mouth is where starch digestion starts.

5) Creates a more alkaline environment in the mouth.
